CHAPTERS SOUTH KEYS ADOPTS DUNLOP SCHOOL

This year in addition to providing grants to selected high-needs schools the Love of Reading foundation will also be running an Adopt-a-School program. Chapters South Keys will be ‘adopting’ Dunlop Public School for a two-week period beginning October 11th. This means that any donations made to the Love of Reading fund in Chapters South Keys between October 11th and October 24th will go directly to building the library at Dunlop School.

School community reaches out
In his recent monthly newsletter, Principal Andrew Nordman congratulated the entire Dunlop school community in their recent support of the Haitian people. The school raised in excess of $250 for World Vision in their ongoing relief efforts for the earthquake tragedy in Haiti.  Dunlop has also raised funds to buy school supplies for children in Malawi and Haiti.

"Thank you to our school community for providing for those in need,"  Mr. Nordman said. "I am proud of the way our school reaches out to others.  It truly embodies our Character trait this month – cooperation."

We are celebrating the OCDSB’s character initiative this year at Dunlop by discussing one theme per month at school.

February is the month that we celebrate Cooperation.  This Character Trait has three pillars.

Ottawa 67s Adopt-a-School Program
67Dunlop PS has been chosen by the Ottawa 67s Hockey Club to participate in its Adopt-a-School program.  We have received season tickets to all home games and will be giving them away in our many reward programs here at the school.  We will be acknowledging students who have academic success, who demonstrate the qualities in our Community of Character program, or involve them to enrich the Dunlop community.

Congratulations to the students who won tickets for the month of September.  We are currently looking at Responsibility in our Community of Character program and will be looking for students who are demonstrating this trait.

We would like to recognize our community sponsor:  Ottawa Region Media.  Without their generosity, we would not have our tickets.

Ontario drops fall report cards in elementary schools
Ontario will stop issuing fall report cards to elementary school pupils starting next year. Teachers in Ontario have pushed for years to get rid of the report cards, which are usually issued in late October or early November, saying they come too soon after the start of the school year.

Important information about the H1N1 Flu virus
The Ottawa-Carleton District School Board has been working closely with Ottawa Public Health and other provincial agencies since the onset of the H1N1 virus in North America, and more specifically, in Ottawa.  This collaboration has given the district the ability to provide the most up-to-date information for schools and their communities in terms of the local situation and also the latest advice for managing the potential infection risk in schools.
